What Is a Recloser, and Why Does It Matter?
A recloser is an automated device that functions like a circuit breaker for overhead power lines. When a fault occurs, whether that is a tree branch making contact with a power line, a squirrel causing a momentary short, or a vehicle hitting a pole, the recloser opens and closes multiple times to try to clear the fault and restore power automatically. If the fault clears, your customers’ lights may flicker but stay on. If the fault is sustained, the device opens and locks out, deenergizing the circuit to protect line equipment, your crew and ensures public safety.
The alternative is a fuse. A fuse blows, a customer calls, and you roll a truck. A recloser gives you the chance to clear temporary faults without any of that.
Oil circuit reclosers have been the standard for decades, but they come with real maintenance costs and operational limitations. The industry has been moving toward electronic vacuum reclosers for good reason: no oil to clean up in the event of a pole knockdown, no battery to maintain, and the ability to collect real data from the device rather than just a generic operation counter.
The LineDefender sits in that category, but with a design approach that sets it apart.
What Makes the LineDefender Different

Hubbell did not build the LineDefender in a vacuum, so to speak. They spent years surveying lineworkers, engineers, and technicians before finalizing the design. The feedback they gathered centered on a few consistent themes: utilities wanted something safer to work with in the field, easier to install and reset, and more reliable than what was already on the market.
A few things came out of that process that are worth knowing about.
The LineDefender sits in a latching cutout rather than a standard dropout cutout. That means it will not accidentally fall open during a storm or in high winds, which is a safety issue that crews deal with more often than most people outside the field realize. It also means the device can be operated from the ground using a hot stick, so your crew does not need a bucket truck to open or close it during routine work or after a lockout.
There is no battery in the LineDefender. That is intentional. Batteries mean maintenance intervals, and maintenance intervals mean ongoing costs and scheduling. This device is designed to sit on the line with very little attention required. The vacuum bottle is rated for 10,000 operations, which is more than most utilities will ever see in a device’s service life.
The semaphore indicator on the bottom of the unit shows the status of the vacuum bottle at a glance. Red means the device is closed and energized. Green means it is open and de-energized. In addition to the semaphore, the device also has a beacon that flashes for 4 to 6 hours after a device locks out following a sustained fault event. This enables lineworkers to quickly spot the device in night conditions as they patrol the line. The device can also be unlatched from the latching cutout to create a visible break, which gives lineworkers the confirmation they need before working downstream, which is a real safety requirement for most utilities, not just a nice feature.
The one-shot or non-reclose mode is another practical feature. If your crew has responded to a lockout and thinks the problem is fixed, they can close the device back in one-shot mode. If the fault is still present, the device opens and stays open after a single operation rather than cycling through four attempts. That protects your crew from an unexpected re-energization and protects bystanders from a line that may not be safe.
For communication, the LineDefender broadcasts a Wi-Fi or Bluetooth signal that your crew can connect to with an iPad or phone from up to 100 feet away. You can pull event logs, review fault data, program the device, and check real-time current readings without leaving the ground. The device is built with an onboard GPS, which ensures that any events and data captured on the logs are marked with a timestamp that is accurate at the millisecond level.
The Bolt-on SCADA Cell Modem (SCM) was recently launched as one of the communication accessories for the device, which can ordered along with the LineDefender or retrofit on existing devices. This is a game changer as it doesn’t require a full pole mounted cabinet and can simply “bolt-on” the device, making it a lot more economical for single phase applications, saving both material and labor cost. It supports both SCADA integration and direct engineering access, so your system operators and engineers can monitor and control it remotely. The SCM accessory also includes energy storage capacitors that power the LineDefender and enable communications during periods of low line current and after a permanent lockout event.
How Cooperatives Are Using It
The real-world results from Hubbell’s pilot program speak clearly. Thirty-six utilities across the U.S. and Canada put the LineDefender through its paces in field conditions. The devices detected more than 75 faulting events and performed 65 protective operations with no false trips or protection issues.
Utilities are finding several practical applications.
In areas that previously had only fuses for protection, the LineDefender gives crews a smarter tool that can handle fault currents too high for a fuse while still coordinating properly with upstream devices. That opens up protection options in parts of the system where options were limited.
For cooperatives managing long distribution lines in rural territory, the ability to pinpoint where faults are occurring more accurately means crews spend less time driving and more time actually resolving problems. Fewer truck rolls, better information, and faster restoration.
